Practical tips to tuck into your Ibiza travel bag

Weather, suitcase, fiestas, geography, and distances: get answers to the most commonly asked questions posed by those travelling to Ibiza for the first time. The following rundown of general information on Santa Eulària des Riu will bring you that much nearer to your holiday in Ibiza by helping you prepare your trip. Time to start the countdown!

Santa Eulària des Riu, called Santa Eulalia del Río in Spanish, is located on Ibiza’s eastern coast and is the island’s second municipality in terms of population, after the capital (Eivissa/Ibiza Town). With a surface area of 153.48 km2, the length of its coastline is 46.164 km, a seaboard studded by 19 accessible beaches and coves. In addition to the town of Santa Eulària, the municipality contains the parishes of Sant Carles de Peralta, Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, Jesús, and Puig d’en Valls, as well as the tourist resorts of Cala Llonga, Siesta, s’Argamassa, Es Canar, Cala Llenya and Es Figueral.

Distances from Santa Eulària

Within the municipality, the town of Santa Eulària is 6.2 km from Sant Carles, 11.6 km from Santa Gertrudis, 11 km from Jesús, and 14.9 km from Puig d’en Valls. In regard to other towns and villages, Santa Eulària is 15.6 km from Ibiza Town, 16 km from Sant Joan, 16.4 km from Sant Miquel, 23.6 km from Sant Antonio, 27.7 km from Sant Josep, and 18.8 km from Sant Jordi. The most distant point, still under 40 km, is Cala Vedella in the southwest of the island.

Climate in Ibiza

The weather in Ibiza and Santa Eulària is typically Mediterranean, with temperatures in our municipality oscillating between an average high of 30.6ºC in August and an average low of 11.3ºC in January. With 300 days of sunshine a year, it is highly unlikely that your holiday will coincide with a string of grey days, and, if you visit us in winter, you will undoubtedly be able to enjoy warm mornings and evenings that are perfect for having lunch at the beach, or going hiking and cycling.

Regarding sea temperatures, these oscillate between a low of 14.8ºC in the month of February and a high of 28ºC in the month of August, making it possible to practise aquatic sports even in the middle of winter, scuba diving included.

What to pack in your suitcase

If you’re travelling to Ibiza from May to October, include light clothing and swimwear, sunglasses, a hat or cap for your head, open footwear and a jacket in case the nights turn chilly. In spring and autumn, it’s a good idea to pack some cool-weather clothes and a light coat, as well as a hat to protect your head, especially if you’re going to practice sport. Finally, in the winter, you’ll have to pack warm clothing to protect you from the damp that settles over the island after sundown.

The geography of Santa Eulària des Riu

The municipality, like the rest of the island, is hilly with irregular relief patterns made up of agricultural valleys and rolling pine-covered hills, the highest of which is Puig d’en Pep (243m), near Cala Llonga. The coastline, also very rugged, is peppered with many coves nestled into the folds of the cliffs, alternating with open beaches, especially in the stretch between Santa Eulària and Cala Llenya.

One of the municipality’s geographic singularities is its river – the only one in Ibiza and the Balearic archipelago –, an 11-km waterway that empties into the sea at the municipal capital. Go explore the river bank by strolling along the pleasant route traced out by the River Route (suitable for all ages), and discover the importance of this water course in the development of Santa Eulària.
