Santa Eulària

Santa Eularia des Riu:Culture, leisure and family tourism by the seashore

The iconic profile of the Puig de Missa monumental complex welcomes all travellers arriving in Santa Eulària from the south. A visual surprise that anticipates the attractions that await you in this lively town with a family atmosphere whose coastline is home to the mouth of the only river in Ibiza and the Balearic Islands.

Located 15 kilometers from Ibiza city, Santa Eulària is the most important town in the northern half of the island and the capital of the municipality of the same name. With a significant resident population throughout the year, you will find its maximum bustle in the summer months, when locals and visitors stroll along the Paseo de s'Alamera and other pedestrian streets in the center, swim in the urban beach of Santa Eulària – the first in the Balearic Islands to be declared a Smoke-Free Beach –, browse its summer market, sit on the terraces of its numerous cafes and restaurants and walk the two kilometers of its pleasant promenade maritime, at one end of which is the pleasant Marina Santa Eulalia marina.

What to see in Santa Eulària

We recommend that you do not visit Santa Eulària in a hurry because there is much to discover. Among other things, the town's monumental jewel: the architectural complex of Puig de Missa, where its iconic 16th-century fortified church stands out, one of the most outstanding churches on Ibiza and Formentera. It is essential to go up there to admire its rustic elegance on the outside, as well as the Baroque-style high altar that is preserved inside, which comes from the church of San Millán, in Segovia.

In the streets neighboring the temple, charming houses and corners await, as well as another visit of great cultural interest: the Ethnographic Museum of Ibiza Can Ros. Located in Can Ros, an excellent example of traditional Ibizan housing, its permanent collection shows the uses and customs of peasant society prior to tourist development.

Another stop of interest in Santa Eulària des Riu is the Sala Barrau, dedicated to the Catalan painter Laureà Barrau i Buñol, who lived in the town for two decades until his death in 1957. In love with the light, color and customs of Ibiza, his drawings and canvases will open a window for you to Ibizan life in the first half of the 20th century.

To know how important the river was for Santa Eulària, there is nothing better than visiting the Centro de Interpretación del Río Can Planetes, where you can learn how one of the old flour mills that were in the vicinity of the riverbed worked, as well as admire another beautiful example of traditional Ibiza architecture. And after the visit, you can take the River Route that will take you to the Pont Vell, a simple bridge built in the 18th century where you will meet one of the beings from the mythology of Ibiza: the fameliar.

What to do in Santa Eulària

During the summer, you won't have to go far from town to go to the beach. In the urban center of Santa Eulària itself you can bathe on the shores of Playa de Santa Eulària, Playa del Río de Santa Eulària and Es Caló de s'Alga. In addition, you will also find other coves and beaches nearby: the accessible beach of Cala Llonga, a prominent tourist center located 5 kilometers south of Santa Eulària; and the quiet shores of Es Niu Blau, Cala Pada and s'Argamassa, to the north of the town. A complete and varied option that is ideal for holidays with children in Ibiza, as well as for all visitors who wish to practice the nautical activities offered. Without forgetting the circular route No. 14 (Gran Ruta), suitable for traveling on foot or by bicycle.

The Santa Eulària River: The only river in Ibiza and the Balearic Islands

As a seaside town, Santa Eulària owes much to the water. And not only to the Mediterranean, which provides it with fish and seafood, but also to the sole watercourse in the Balearic Islands: the Santa Eulària River. Historically, its waters were used to irrigate the surrounding fields and orchards, and also to power the flourmills that clustered at the foot of Puig de Missa hill. These practical infrastructures were of vital importance up until the 18th century.

One pleasant way to explore this discreet but strategic waterway is to follow the self-guiding footpath known as the River Route. It runs along the waterfront, passes the Santa Eulària beach, reaches the mouth of the river and the Pont Vell Bridge, continues on to the Can Planetes River Interpretation Centre, and finally goes up to Puig de Missa, where you’ll find the church and the Can Ros Ethnographic Museum of Ibiza.
