Sala Barrau

The promenade of Santa Eulària des Riu leads to the fifth stop of this cultural route, which is located on Paseo de s'Alamera. On this occasion, the settings that you have seen on previous visits are filled with protagonists: the Ibizans who lived there in the first half of the 20th century.

The Ibiza of that time appears in the exhibited paintings of the Barcelona painter Laureà Barrau i Buñol (1863-1957), who arrived at the island in 1912. Trained as an artist in France, Italy and Argentina, his work draws on the pictorial movements of historicism, eclecticism and naturalism.

When Laureà Barrau i Buñol arrived in Ibiza for the first time with his wife Berta Vallier, he was captivated by the light, color and customs of the island. So, little by little, he spent more and more time on the island until they finally decided to settle there. Starting in 1931, Barrau's gaze focused on Santa Eulària des Riu and its people, where he lived until his death in 1957. His widow opened a small museum in the house they bought in Puig de Missa, known for many years as the Barrau Museum.

In 2014, the city council inaugurated the Sala Barrau on Paseo de s'Alamera, where part of the work of the artist is exhibited, who frequently portrayed his beloved wife and people from the town, captured everyday scenes and landscapes, and He left a beautiful legacy to the place that inspired him so much.
